Jakarta is back to normal today. After violent protests on Friday in the center of Jakartas tourism, dining and shopping venues by Muslim groups to demand the resignation of the current governor for Jakarta, the situation on Saturday is no more a situation. Shops are open, visitors and locals enjoy restaurants and it appears a violent escalation never happened.
Wuryastuti Sunario, who also works for Indonesia.travel posted on her Facebook on Saturday:
“Have just had my lunch in the mall: the place is packed with people. More than normally. Some streets are also jammed with traffic. So we are back in business.”
The Indonesian President Joko Widodo had postponed his trip to Australia following the violent protest that erupted Friday in Jakarta.
Gov. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, commonly known as Ahok, is alleged to have insulted Islam by criticizing his opponents’ use of a Quranic verse in a stump speech. Ahok is a member of Indonesia’s Christian minority.
At least 160 protestors and 79 police officers were injured during the clashes.
