The tourism industry plays a key role in Thailand’s economy, and the initial visa free program has already shown positive results.

  • The specific countries to receive visa-free access haven’t been announced yet.
  • The success of the China visa waiver program played a major role in the decision to expand the initiative.
  • Thailand aims to welcome 34-35 million foreign visitors in 2024, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

Thailand is preparing to welcome even more tourists, with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announcing plans to expand Thailand visa free travel to citizens of several new countries.

This follows the recent success of waiving visas for Chinese and Indian visitors, a move credited with boosting the Southeast Asian nation’s crucial tourism sector.

“The visa-free program for China has helped stimulate the economy quite a lot,” said Prime Minister Thavisin, “and we’ll continue to do this with several more countries.”

While specific details remain under wraps, the announcement signals Thailand’s commitment to attracting more international visitors.

The tourism industry plays a key role in Thailand’s economy, and the initial visa free program has already shown positive results.

From January to February 11th, foreign tourist arrivals surged by 48% compared to the same period last year, with China leading the pack. This promising trend aligns with the government’s goal of welcoming 34-35 million foreign visitors in 2024, exceeding the pre-pandemic record of nearly 40 million in 2019.

With the expansion of visa free travel on the horizon, Thailand is poised to attract even more tourists, further propelling its economic growth and solidifying its position as a top travel destination.
