MOSCOW, Russia – Bus stops in the center of Moscow may soon feature the names of nearby cultural landmarks to help raise awareness of their existence, the Izvestia newspaper reported Tuesday.
Stops for various forms of overground public transportation will include the names of nearby museums and other cultural sites if residents support the idea in an online poll, Yury Nechayev, head of the executive council for the city’s districts, said in comments carried by Izvestia.
“On Arbat, for instance, there is the stop well known to everyone as Dom Knigi [“Bookstore”], and next to it is the Lermontov Museum, which is equally significant from a historical point of view. And the October Movie Theater stop is adjacent to the Tsvetayeva Museum,” Nechayev was cited by Izvestia as saying.
“Residents suggested making additions to the [bus stop] names. So it would be ‘Dom Knigi — Lermontov Museum,’ ‘October Movie Theater — Tsvetaeva Museum.’ It would stress that several cultural sites are located in the same area,” Nechayev said.
The pilot project will be conducted in the city’s Arbat area, whose residents first proposed the idea, and if it proves successful, it will be expanded to the rest of the city, Izvestia reported.
