Civitatis Announces CEO Transition After 18 Years

Albeto Gutiérrez

Civitatis, an online marketplace for guided tours and activities focused on Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking travelers, has announced a leadership transition effective January 1. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Alberto GutiĆ©rrez will step down from his executive role, with AndrĆ©s Spitzer, currently Chief Product and Technology Officer, appointed as the company’s new CEO.

GutiĆ©rrez, who founded Civitatis in 2008, will remain on the company’s Board of Directors. During his tenure, the company grew from a personal startup into an international platform serving approximately 1.2 million travelers per month. Civitatis has operated profitably since its inception and did not take external investment until 2022, when Vitruvian Partners acquired a stake in the company.

Spitzer brings experience from previous roles at Amazon, Europcar, and Ubeeqo, and has led product and technology development at Civitatis in recent years. His appointment reflects a shift toward technology-driven scaling as the company expands its operations.

Chief Operating Officer Enrique Espinel will continue in his role, with a focus on international growth, particularly in Latin America, where the company has reported strong recent expansion.

The transition marks a new phase for Civitatis as it moves beyond founder-led management while maintaining continuity in leadership.
