US Foreign Visitor Numbers Keep Increasing

There were 5,279,813 international visitor arrivals to the United States in November 2023.

In November 2023, the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) released new data indicating that there were 5,279,813 international visitor arrivals to the United States, marking a 15.9% growth compared to November 2022.

Additionally, the number of US citizens departing from the United States for outbound travel in November 2023 amounted to 7,359,922, reflecting an 11.3% increase from November 2022.

International Arrivals to the United States

• Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,279,813, increased 15.9% compared to November 2022 and represents 86.6% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for November 2019.

• Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,404,745 increased +23.9% from November 2022.

• November 2023 was the thirty-second consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased year-over-year (YOY).

• November 2023 was the ninth consecutive month that overseas visitors totaled over 2 million.

• Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, none reported a decrease in visitor volume from November 2022.

• The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,494,839), Mexico (1,380,229), the United Kingdom (297,862), Japan (152,843) and Brazil (133,499). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 65.5% of total international arrivals.

International Departures from the United States

• Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 7,359,922 increased 11.3% compared to November 2022 and were 101.6% of total departures in pre-pandemic November 2019.

• November 2023 was the thirty-second consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased on a YOY basis.

• November 2023 year-to-date (YTD) total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States totaled 89,032,208, a YOY increase of 23.0%. The YTD market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.9% and overseas was 50.1%.

• Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,059,179 (40.7% of total departures for November and 36.6% year-to-date (YTD)). Canada recorded a YOY increase of 15.4%.

• Combined YTD, Mexico (32,575,482) and the Caribbean (9,684,111) accounted for 47.5% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.

• Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,224,397 departures. This accounted for 16.6% of all departures in November and 21.0% year-to-date (YTD). Outbound visitation to Europe in November 2023 increased 14.2% compared to November 2022.

In addition to providing statistics, the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) creates a positive climate for growth in travel and tourism by reducing institutional barriers to tourism, administers joint marketing efforts, provides official travel and tourism statistics, and coordinates efforts across federal agencies through the Tourism Policy Council. The Office works to enhance the international competitiveness of the US travel and tourism industry and increase its exports, thereby creating US employment and economic growth.
