A lady, mother, grandmother, great tourism personality, and Kenyan of Seychelles heritage has died suddenly, shocking both countries.

Mrs. Popsy Getonga was a successful Nairobi tour and travel operator, and she was also a Seychelles Tourism Ambassador who was liked and admired by the industry at large. Popsy was born Popsy Bastiana D’Souza from a Seychellois family line (leaving behind brothers Tony, Andrew, and George Staussi) and was previously married to Alfred (Alfie) Getonga of Nairobi.

Today the world is looking at women who made success in the tourism and business world and this has become a brownie point for many an organizations, but remarkable as it is, Popsy Getonga had this accolade under her belt even before this move became a plus and was noticed.

In the 1990s, after Alain St.Ange had taken the head of Seychelles Marketing before becoming the CEO of the island’s Tourism Board and later Minister of Tourism, he found Seychellois professionals in the diaspora at large and named Popsy Getonga of Nairobi a Tourism Ambassador.

“Popsy was a go getter who believed in tourism and who remained true to her line of work.”

The Tourism Ambassadors program was reserved only for Seychellois living in and working in the four corners of the world. It was set up with the notion that “you can take a Seychellois out of Seychelles, but you can never take Seychelles out of a Seychellois” and was calling on the diaspora to give a helping hand in the cities, towns, or villages where they resided and to be connected to their local press as no one else could do. Popsy Getonga became one of the first to take up the call and became a very active member of this group of foot soldiers.

Alain St.Ange said when hearing the sad news of Popsy Getonga that tourism had lost a believer and a dedicated trade member. He described her as:

“A Seychellois and a Kenyan who loved both countries with passion and who wanted only but the best for each and every Seychellois and for each and every Kenyans.”

“I remember so well when she flew to Seychelles to be part of the island’s Tourism Ambassador’s Program – a proud Popsy who was standing on stage at the International Conference Centre alongside the President of the Republic and other dignitaries accepting her role as a ‘foot soldier’ that Seychelles so needed. Seychelles and Kenya lost a great friend and ally, and tourism lost a great personality,” said St.Ange.

The funeral of Popsy Getonga will take place in Nairobi this coming Friday.

After one year of service, he was promoted to the position of CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

In 2012 the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands regional Organization was formed and St Ange was appointed as the first president of the organization.

In a 2012 cabinet re-shuffle, St Ange was appointed as Minister of Tourism and Culture which he resigned on 28 December 2016 in order to pursue a candidacy as Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisation.

At the UNWTO General Assembly in Chengdu in China, a person who was being sought after for the “Speakers Circuit” for tourism and sustainable development was Alain St.Ange.

St.Ange is the former Seychelles Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine who left office in December last year to run for the position of Secretary General of the UNWTO. When his candidature or document of endorsement was withdrawn by his country just a day before the elections in Madrid, Alain St.Ange showed his greatness as a speaker when he addressed the UNWTO gathering with grace, passion, and style.

His moving speech was recorded as the one on the best marking speeches at this UN international body.

African countries often remember his Uganda address for the East Africa Tourism Platform when he was a guest of honor.

As former Tourism Minister, St.Ange was a regular and popular speaker and was often seen addressing forums and conferences on behalf of his country. His ability to speak ‘off the cuff’ was always seen as a rare ability. He often said he speaks from the heart.

In Seychelles he is remembered for a marking address at the official opening of the island’s Carnaval International de Victoria when he reiterated the words of John Lennon famous song… ” you may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one. One day you will all join us and the world will be better as one”. The world press contingent gathered in Seychelles on the day ran with the words by St.Ange which made headlines everywhere.

St.Ange delivered the keynote address for the “Tourism & Business Conference in Canada”

Seychelles is a good example for sustainable tourism. This is therefore not surprising to see Alain St.Ange being sought after as a speaker on the international circuit.
