Category 5 Hurricane Beryl: Jamaica is Next – what to expect?

Cat 5

It’s a monster storm like no one before. Category 5 hurricane Beryl is also fast-moving and will slide through its path faster, which is good news.

Hurricane Beryl is now a Category Five Monster Hurricane, and with 160 mph (257 kmh), is the strongest recorded in the Caribbean. Hurricane Emily in 2005 was the second strongest. In hundreds of years of Hurricane history, no storm like Beryl has ever been documented.

The next Island Group on its path is still more than one day’s travel time away. The latest prediction sees the storm as a category 3 when striking this tourist island. Jamaica has dealt with similar hurricanes before, and most of the infrastructure, including hotels and resorts, is built to sustain such winds.

Authority and hotel staff are preparing guests to stay safe during this storm. Judging from the first comments received from Grenada, the storm’s duration over the island seems to be short, which is important to minimize damage.

Jamaica is also home to the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Center, and its minister of tourism is one of the most connected and recognized people in the global tourism world. All this will help Jamaica weather this storm.
