Hurricane Beryl: Vigilance, Safety, and Resilience in Tourism

Emergency declared by the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Center

The Jamaica-based  Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) is urging all stakeholders in the tourism sector to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as Hurricane Beryl approaches the Caribbean islands. Jamaica is currently one of the countries in the predicted path of this category 4 hurricane.

The protection of life and property is paramount, and all necessary precautions must be taken to minimize risks associated with this climatic event.

Tourism, while inherently vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes, has demonstrated remarkable resilience time and again.

Our industry can recover and rebuild, ensuring the continuation of its critical role in the global economy. However, the strength of this resilience hinges on preparedness, effective management, and robust partnerships.

The GTRCMC emphasizes the importance of collaboration between government agencies, private sector entities, and local communities. By working together, we can enhance our ability to respond to crises and accelerate recovery efforts. Partnerships play a vital role in sharing resources, expertise, and information, which are essential for mitigating the impact of hurricanes and other climatic events.

In light of Hurricane Beryl, we remind all tourism operators, businesses, and workers to:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and advisories from official sources to stay informed about the storm’s trajectory and potential impact.
  • Implement Safety Protocols: Ensure that all safety measures and evacuation plans are in place and understood by staff and guests.
  • Secure Property: Take necessary steps to protect property and assets, including reinforcing structures, securing loose items, and safeguarding important documents.
  • Support Each Other: Foster a spirit of community and cooperation, assisting those in need and sharing resources where possible.

The GTRCMC stands as a crucial source of information and support in preparing for, managing, and recovering from climatic crises such as hurricanes.

GTRCMS offers a range of resources, including best practices, training programs, and recovery strategies designed to enhance the resilience of the tourism sector.
