Battambang, the capital of Battambang Province and the third-largest city in Cambodia has a rich history dating back to the 11th century under the Khmer Empire.

Battambang‘s Department of Tourism officials have assessed five potential tourist destinations within the province, to develop plans to boost both national and international tourism.

Led by Department Director Uch Um Phinisara, the evaluation includes sites such as Laang Kang Keb (Frog Cave), Teak Traing Cave, Teuk Pus (Hot Spring), Laang 100 Phnom Prampi (100 Caves, Seven Mountains), and a waterfall at the Cambodia-Thailand border.

The initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance tourism in these areas, with the working group set to collaborate with authorities for further development. The finalization of plans is contingent on discussions with the tourism ministry, and a report is being prepared for an upcoming meeting with the ministry.

Ho Vandy, an adviser to the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), emphasized the historical significance of Battambang province, citing its preservation of French colonial-era buildings and the designation of some resorts as cultural heritage sites.

He highlighted that further development of these tourist destinations would not only diversify entertainment options but also contribute to the preservation of Battambang’s history.

Vandy anticipated that the development would attract more national and international tourists, benefiting the local economy by providing opportunities for residents to sell their products and services.

Additionally, he noted that the initiative could help reduce local migration and transform the targeted resorts into conservation areas.

About Battambang

Battambang, the capital of Battambang Province and the third-largest city in Cambodia has a rich history dating back to the 11th century under the Khmer Empire.

Known for being a major rice-producing province, it served as a significant commercial hub and provincial capital during the Siamese rule from 1795 to 1907.

Despite its diverse population, including Khmer, Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, and Chinese communities, Battambang has retained its Khmer identity. The city, situated on the Sangkae River, boasts well-preserved French Colonial architecture and serves as the northwest hub, connecting the region with Phnom Penh and Thailand.

Recognized for its cultural contributions, Battambang joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023 for gastronomy, crafts, and folk art, with other Cambodian cities possibly following suit in subsequent cycles.
