The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism recently hosted a crucial workshop focused on advancing ASEAN countries’ festival tourism.
Attended by experts and policymakers from various ASEAN nations, the event aimed to foster collaboration in developing festival-based tourism and enhancing regional connectivity among destinations.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, with only 30% of the pre-pandemic 2019 visitor levels in 2022, ASEAN countries collectively welcomed 43 million international visitors. In response, ASEAN has intensified efforts to fortify cooperation in tourism for sustainable recovery.
Over the last two years, ASEAN introduced several pivotal policies, including strategies for marketing, post-COVID-19 recovery, and sustainable tourism development frameworks. Among these initiatives, a prominent focus has been on crafting tourism products to bolster destination competitiveness.
A significant step forward was the launch of the ASEAN festival tourism development project, aiming to diversify regional tourism offerings and foster connectivity among member nations.
The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, serving as the project coordinator, proposed tailored solutions for effective festival tourism development within ASEAN, emphasizing Vietnam’s involvement.
The region boasts a rich tapestry of festivals, showcasing diverse cultures and traditions year-round. These festivals provide tourists with immersive experiences of local customs, culinary delights, and distinctive entertainment. Notable among these are Cambodia’s New Year festival, Thailand’s Songkran water festival, various festivities in Laos, Indonesia’s Bali art festival, and Vietnam’s Mid-Autumn festival.
The workshop participants highlighted the importance of positioning ASEAN as a festival destination capable of interlinking diverse locales, enriching tour options, and establishing a unique allure.
Discussions encompassed global best practices and emerging trends in festival-based tourism. Recommendations were put forth to effectively manage and leverage festival tourism, ensuring harmonious tourism growth while preserving cultural and heritage values.
The concerted efforts and collaborations within ASEAN signify a proactive stride toward revitalizing the tourism sector, utilizing the vibrant tapestry of festivals to promote regional unity and sustainable development.
