The 5-star luxury hotel The St. Regis San Francisco has been honored for its industry leading sustainability practices.

The St. Regis San Francisco, a Forbes Five-Star hotel, is pleased to announce that the hotel has been awarded the Hotel Council of San Francisco’s 2024 Hospitality Heroes Award for Sustainability – Hotels. The exquisite property is steadfastly committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability across all aspects of its operations. 

“We are proud to lead the way in sustainable hospitality practices,” said Roger Huldi, the hotel’s general manager. “This distinction recognizes our unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability, showcased through our green design initiatives, water conservation measures, utilization of local food sources, waste reduction programs, and more.”

Waste Management

  • The hotel’s comprehensive waste management program includes hand-separation of glass, aluminum, and food waste for recycling and composting, significantly reducing landfill waste and achieving a 92% diversion rate. Recycling initiatives extend to cardboard compaction and local conversion of cooking oil into biodiesel, further minimizing environmental impact.

Utilities and Energy Conservation

  • The St. Regis San Francisco employs a multitude of energy-saving measures, including low-flow fixtures in guestrooms and public spaces, and air-cooled chillers that eliminate the need for a cooling tower. The commitment to energy efficiency extends to the utilization of ENERGY STAR appliances, high-efficiency boilers, and LED lighting retrofits throughout the premises. The hotel has also installed ten electric car charging stations.

Guestroom Initiatives

  • The hotel has implemented innovative guestroom initiatives, such as the Residential Bathroom Amenity Program, aimed at significantly reducing plastic and landfill waste by 2025. Guests are also encouraged to participate in green housekeeping programs, contributing to water conservation efforts, and recycling bins are provided in every guestroom.

Food and Beverage Initiatives

  • The St. Regis San Francisco has transitioned to 100% compostable tea bags and taken significant steps to eliminate plastic bottles from its Private Dining menu. Biodegradable and compostable alternatives, such as paper or corn-plastic straws and to­go containers, further promote sustainability in the food and beverage services.

Community Partnerships

  • Through partnerships with organizations like Replate and Clean the World, The St. Regis San Francisco actively contributes to food redistribution efforts and global hygiene initiatives, supporting vulnerable communities worldwide. The hotel has partnered with the Wild Oyster Project’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program to recycle the shells of oysters purchased at The St. Regis Bar to build native oyster reefs, reducing erosion along the shorelines and restoring threatened ecosystem processes.

Eco-Friendly Partnerships

  • Collaborations with Ecolab and Recology further amplify the hotel’s sustainability efforts, focusing on reducing water and carbon intensity, minimizing landfill waste, and utilizing environmentally friendly cleaning products and recycling programs.
