Seychelles founding President, Sir James R. Mancham has been nominated to be a member of a Select Committee of Le Club de Madrid to examine the state of democracy in the world today which appears to be on the declined.

Members of Le Club de Madrid will act as drivers and catalysts of a participative process engaging academics, politicians, civil society representatives and public opinion leaders with youth, women and minorities being represented in all regions of the world. On the basis of indicators and trend analysis, the quality and sustainability of democracy as a local, national and supra-national level, will be jointly assessed with a view to make specific proposals on how warning signals of continuing declined in democracy may be reversed in practical terms.

Sir James is at this time in Baku, Azerbaijan, attending the Global Shared Society Forum which has been organized by Le Club de Madrid in association with Nizami Ganjavi International Center (a benevolent Azerbaijan Foundation for the promotion of peace progress and prosperity worldwide) and which was opened at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baku on Sunday 27th April by President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan.

Among those who spoke at the opening ceremony was Vaira Vike Freiberga – President of Republic of Latvia (1999-2007), co-Chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center and President of Le Club de Madrid; Tarja Halonen – President of Finland (2000-2012), member of Le Club de Madrid and co-Chair of the U.N. High-Level Panel on Sustainability (2011-2012).

Last night (28th April), President Aliyev hosted the participants of the conference at a special dinner at the 5-star+ Jumeirah Hotel on the shore-front of Baku. Among those who attended were Emil Constantinescu – President of Romania (1996-2000); Boris Tadic – President of Serbia (2004-2012); Mikheil Saakashvili – President of the Republic of Georgia (2004-2013); Jorge Sampaio – President of Portugal (1996-2006); Jorge Quiroga – President of Bolivia (2001-2002); Petar Stoyanov – President of Bulgaria (1997-2002); Festus Mogae – President of Botswana (1998-2008), Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga – President of Sri Lanka (1994-2005), Alexander Likhotal – President of the Green Cross International of Russia; Jakob von Euxkull – President and Founder of World Future Council and Monsieur Olivier Gisgard d’Estaing – founding Dean and Honorary Chairman of INSEAD, France.

In a statement issued from Baku this morning, Sir James said – “The study that will be undertaken on Next Generation Democracy will help to understand whether the perceived crisis of democracy is deepening or not and whether it manifest itself differently in each region – or rather it constitutes a global process, which may in fact become a systematic crisis. Le Club de Madrid’s objectives is of course to advance democracy worldwide and to assess its quality with a view to prevent deterioration. It is a challenging task but we must face the reality of today against the background of having a democracy than can delivers what is required for a better world within the complexity of modern times,” Sir James said.
