In a bid to improve its tourism reputation, New South Wales (NSW), Australia‘s most populous state, is taking a tough stance against taxi drivers who overcharge passengers or refuse fares.
The move comes after reports of taxi drivers failing to use meters, overcharging, and refusing service, tarnishing the state’s image.
Transport commissioner Anthony Wing, quoted by 9News, emphasized the importance of restoring trust with tourists.
To tackle this issue, authorities will create a blacklist for such taxi drivers.
Additionally, plain-clothes officers will be deployed to monitor driver activity.
The government is also considering harsher penalties, including permanent bans for repeat offenders.
