Bulgaria and Romania are poised to become the newest additions to Europe’s Schengen Zone within the next three months, marking a significant expansion of the border-free travel area.
This development will allow travelers holding Schengen visas seamless entry into these countries, eliminating the need for additional visas.
The Schengen Area, currently comprising 27 countries, enables approximately 400 million individuals to travel without internal border checks. However, Bulgaria and Romania, both European Union members, have faced hurdles in their bid to join this agreement despite years of effort.
The move, scheduled for March 2024, initially facilitates unrestricted travel by air and sea. However, negotiations for land border movements are ongoing and not covered by this agreement.
While this decision signals a milestone in easing travel restrictions, it has been met with prior concerns from some EU states regarding potential impacts on migration challenges in Europe.
Nonetheless, the imminent inclusion of Bulgaria and Romania reflects a significant step forward in the expansion of the Schengen Zone.
