Forty-seven people died and eleven were injured in a TransAsia plane crash on Taiwan on one of the Penghu islands as it attempted to make an emergency landing today, Wednesday, July 23, 2014.

There were 54 passengers and 4 crew members on board the twin-engine ATR-72 commercial aircraft that was flying from Kaohsiung to Magong (formerly known as Makung).

Due to strong winds and heavy rain from Typhoon Matmo which hit Taiwan on Tuesday and was on its way out, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

Director-General of the Civil Aeronautics Administration Jean Shen said the plane was attempting to make a go-around after the pilot asked the control tower for permission to do so. The control tower lost contact on the second attempt.

Flight GE222 departed from Kaohsiung city in the southern end of Taiwan, heading to its destination of Magong city in the Penghu district just under 79 miles away. The plane may have crashed in a residential area; residents reported seeing a fireball.

The flight departed Kaohsiung at 5:43 local time. Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration reported the crash is under investigation.

Magong Airport is currently closed.
