Today, the three regional committees for the Americas, Middle East, and Africa met at the UNWTO General Assembly in Chengdu, China, to elect their new committee countries for the next UNWTO Executive Council.
Showing a new best practice for solidarity and cooperation, the Americas committee introduced a system of split terms for the Executive Council. Candidates in the Americas region decided to split the 4-year terms of being elected as an executive member.
Therefore, Argentina and Peru will split their 4-year term with Argentina serving 2 years, and Peru serving 2 years.
Similar agreements were put in place for Uruguay and Brazil, and for Jamaica and Honduras.
