According to the most recent survey, Montauk, a town located north of Albany in upstate New York, is the most expensive beach destination in the United States this summer.

The survey compared all U.S. beach destinations based on the minimum price travelers will have to spend to stay in the cheapest available double room there. The average minimum cost during the month of August served as the basis of comparison. It bears mentioning that only hotels or inns rated at least 2 stars and located close to the beach were taken into consideration.

At an average nightly rate of $312 for its least expensive double room, Montauk leads the rankings. Nantucket, a small island located 30 miles south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and Cannon Beach, a coastal city in northwest Oregon, complete the podium at average overnight rates of $285 and $262, respectively.

California’s most expensive summer destination is Santa Monica, which ranks fourth most expensive overall at a nightly rate of $261. Along with Coronado ($221) and Santa Barbara ($209), a total of three destinations from the Golden State have made it into the Top 10.
