According to official sources from the Secretary of State, Rosana Morillo Rodriguez, the Spanish State Secretary for Tourism, has voluntarily resigned from her position.

The official version is the Secretary wants to embark on a new professional stage separate from politics. Politics and being outspoken about what many see as questionable activities by UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili most likely contributed to his decision.

Born in Madrid in 1972, Morillo holds a degree in Mathematics from the Complutense University of Madrid. She started her international career in 1996 in Mexico, working as a technology consultant for companies in different sectors. She continued her work in France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. She has worked as a consultant in technology applied to human resources and has 20 years of experience before she was appointed Secretary of Tourism in 2022.

She has been the director general of tourism for the government of the Balearic Islands since 2019.

The new tourism secretary will be filled by Rosario Sánchez, a former minister of finance under Francina Armegol’s government and delegate of the Spanish government in the Balearic Islands. The Council of Ministers is expected to approve her appointment on Tuesday.

Morillo, who has been in his current role since 2022, expressed his gratitude to Reyes Maroto, Héctor Gómez, and Jordi Hereu, the three ministers she had collaborated with. She mentioned their unwavering support and confidence.

Having worked in an industry that is so important to Spain’s economy, she feels a great sense of pride.
