Two New Zealand tourists have been arrested and are being held in prison following an alleged assault on a police officer on the resort island of Phuket in Thailand.

Authorities identified the men as Hamish Art Day, 36, and Oscar Matson Day, 34.

They are accused of attacking a police officer, Somsak Noo-iad, who had pulled them over for reckless driving.

According to a police statement issued on Sunday, the incident occurred when Officer Noo-iad attempted to take photos as evidence.

The men allegedly assaulted him and tried to steal his firearm.

Thai authorities have revoked the tourists’ visas and they face a ban on entering Thailand in the future, pending the outcome of an investigation.

Police released a photo showing a man pushing a traffic policeman to the ground, with another man standing by.

Neither the arrested men nor their lawyer have commented on the allegations.
