The popular tourist island of Indonesia has issued the highest alert level due to an imminent eruption from Mount Agung volcano on Bali. Agung is among around 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, as it sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

Around 10,000 people were evacuated as officials moved people at least 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) away from the volcano area.

The last time Mount Agung erupted in 1963, over 1,000 people were killed. At that time, the volcano sent large amounts of debris into the air, including ash and a hot cloud of gas, along with extensive lava flows.

Officials reported increased seismic activity, and people have said they can feel the tremors. While it is difficult to predict an eruption, with the increased activity, it is better to err on the side of caution.

Bali’s international airport in Denpasar, used by millions of foreign tourists every year, is currently operating as normal.
