AA Airbus A321 Neo hard landing in Maui: Multiple injuries

AA OGG

6 people on an American Airlines Flight from LAX to OGG were injured and transported to a hospital after a rough landing on an A321 Neo on Saturday.

American Airlines flight 271 from Los Angeles to Kahului, Maui took off 1 hour and 18 minutes late on Saturday.

When it landed in Kahului on Saturday at 2.00 pm, it made a hard landing, causing injuries to 5 flight attendants and 1 passenger. They were taken to a local hospital and later released. The cause for this hard landing has not been released.

A hard landing is when an aircraft hits the ground with greater force and speed than a normal landing. This can happen when the aircraft’s approach angle is incorrect, the vertical descent rate is too high, or there are sudden changes in the wind during landing. A hard landing can cause potential damage, injury, and stress.

Feedback from many passengers is, that the Airbus 321 Neo, similar to the Boeing 737 is a 2-engine plane and is not a comfortable choice to use for a longer overwater flight.

The Airbus A321neo is a single-aisle airliner developed from the A321 and A320neo family. The A321neo has a range of 3,995 nautical miles (7,399 km), a maximum take-off weight of 97 tons (97,000 kg/213,848 lb), and an engine with 24,500–35,000 lbf (109–156 kN) of thrust.

Flight 271 from Los Angeles International Airport “experienced an issue upon landing,” the airline said. “The aircraft taxied to the gate under its power and customers deplaned normally.”

The weather in Maui at the time was partly cloudy and windy with a temperature of roughly 80 degrees, according to National Weather Service data.

Kahului airport is located between two mountains and is known for rough and sometimes difficult landings.

AA 271 carried 167 customers and seven crew members.

The Airbus was taken out of service for a detailed inspection after this landing.
