DETROIT – A Canadian airline plans to offer flights to Cuba departing from airports a short drive from Michigan.

The Detroit News reports Monday that Sunwing Airlines Inc. plans to offer flights to the beach resort town of Varadero, Cuba from Windsor Airport near Detroit.

It also plans flights from an airport in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, across the border from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

U.S. citizens are mostly barred from spending money on travel to Cuba. But the newspaper reports that officials expect Americans to make up at least half the passengers on the route from Windsor Airport.
