Russian Railways indicated that the derailment may have been caused by the heavy rainfall that took place recently.

Russian Railways reported that around 70 people sustained injuries when nine cars derailed from a 511 passenger train, en route from Vorkuta in northeastern Komi Republic above the Arctic Circle, to the Black Sea resort city of Novorossiysk, approximately 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) south As of now, there have been no verified fatalities reported from the crash site.

The railway operator confirmed that Train 511 had 14 carriages and 232 passengers on board. Russian Railways indicated that the derailment may have been caused by the heavy rainfall that took place recently.

According to the railway authorities, the derailment occurred near the town of Inta around 6:12pm Moscow time.

In a Telegram post, Russian Railways stated that emergency service crews have been sent to the location to aid passengers. They are currently working on providing assistance while gathering more details about the victims. Additionally, traffic in that area has been halted.

Russian Railways also announced that it has established a special team led by General Director to investigate the derailment. Two specialized recovery trains have been dispatched to the site.

The criminal investigation into the derailment has been initiated by the North-Western Transport Prosecutor’s office. In the meantime, it has been reported that the head of the Republic of Komi regional administration has traveled to the location of the incident.
