A tourist from Japan is in the hospital after he was stabbed in a residential Honolulu neighborhood.

News reports say the male tourist was in a convertible with others who were apparently lost in the Palolo Valley area early Friday when a suspect approached them, demanded money and stabbed the man.

The tourists, who were in several cars, drove to Waikiki where they flagged a police officer at a gas station.

Emergency Medical Services Assistant Chief Wayne Kruse says the 23-year-old man was transported in serious condition to a hospital trauma center at about 12:30 a.m. with a stab wound.

Reports say his condition is now stable.

Police are searching for the suspect.
