SAN FRANCISCO – As the countdown to the New Year begins, two in five Americans (41 percent) plan to ring in 2011 away from home, according to a recent survey* by leading discount travel site Hotwire.com®. And many of those travelers are looking to celebrate in some of the most exciting cities, both within and outside of our nation’s borders.

Chicago, Las Vegas and Toronto top the list as the most popular destinations for New Year’s Eve. As surprising as it may be to some to see beautiful Toronto near the top, it may be even more surprising to see perennial favorite New York City at number seven. Either way, it’s not hard to see why watching fireworks over Navy Pier while celebrating the New Year in the great capital of the Midwest is number one.

The top 10 destinations for New Year’s Eve 2010, according to hotel bookings on Hotwire.com, include the following:

Chicago, Illinois

Las Vegas, Nevada

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Atlanta, Georgia

Los Angeles, California

Orlando, Florida

New York, New York

Washington, D.C.

San Francisco, California

Boston, Massachusetts

“New Year’s Eve booking trends on Hotwire reflect where the deals are this year,” said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire® Group. “New York City traditionally experiences tighter room availability and higher prices around New Year’s Eve. However, some of the year’s best deals are consistently found in cities like Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The great values on hotels in these cities led to higher rankings on our top-ten list this year.”
