The United States Department of State has cautioned that there is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks targeting LGBTQ events globally in the upcoming weeks. Earlier this month, a similar warning was issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding potential security concerns during June, which is a Pride celebrations month.

Since their inception in 1970 in the US, as demonstrations for LGBTQI+ rights, Pride month festivities have expanded to numerous other nations, primarily in Europe. But in Muslim states, Russia, and other developing countries claiming to “uphold conservative and religious principles,” such gatherings are strictly prohibited by local regulations.

The United States Department of State had issued an advisory warning that overseas terror groups could target “LGBTQI+ persons and events,” and urging “US citizens overseas to exercise increased caution” in light of the “potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”

US citizen are strongly advised to be especially vigilant at “pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons” as well as tourism hotspots.

American citizens were also instructed to remain vigilant for any potential violent threats linked to LGBTQI+ gatherings that may be shared on the internet.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have recently issued an earlier warning as recently as on May 10, regarding potential threats from foreign terrorist organizations or their supporters during the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month.

American government authorities refrained from disclosing specific details about vulnerable locations or regions, as well as the exact nature of the anticipated risks. Previous incidents, such as the tragic mass shooting at Florida gay club eight years go, that left 49 dead and 53 hurt, were highlighted in the announcement as examples of past terrorist attacks targeting LGBTQ-themed events.
