TRIPOLI, Libya – Two Libyan soldiers were killed and several aircraft damaged during the bombardment of Tripoli International Airport by rival militant groups. The control tower was also hit by a rocket, according to the airport official.
“Shells hit the airplanes and cars that were at the airport, as well as the Customs building,” – said the representative of Libyan armed forces.
It was not yet clear what rebel groups shelled the airport.
Recently the UN has announced its intention to withdraw all its troops from Libya as the situation in the country is becoming more dangerous and unstable.
In its report the UN stated that the decision to withdraw troops was made due to intensified clashes between rival Libyan factions and by closing of the main international airport in Tripoli.
