A tourist from Belarus died in hospital, several hours after nearly drowning in the Mediterranean Sea off the Netanya coast.

The 50-year-old man was evacuated by Magen David Adom to the city’s Laniado Hospital in serious condition after a man with whom he was swimming managed to pull him out of the water.

Preliminary investigation suggested that three men who had gone swimming together, two tourists from Belarus and an Israeli man, were apparently carried away from the shore by strong currents.

One of the tourists managed to swim back and pull his friend out of the water.

The Israeli man, a Netanya resident, was still missing at sea.

Helicopters assisted police in searching for the man. The search was scheduled to continue next morning.
