The comprehensive installation project will cover 59 aircraft from the Airbus A220 and A320 family, bringing a new era of connectivity to SWISS customers.

Swiss International (SWISS Airlines) has announced a groundbreaking initiative to equip its entire short-haul aircraft fleet with broadband internet access, starting in the winter of 2024/2025.

The comprehensive installation project will cover 59 aircraft from the Airbus A220 and A320 family, bringing a new era of connectivity to SWISS customers.

Aligned with the strategic vision of the Lufthansa Group, SWISS aims to gradually implement the necessary technology across its short-haul fleet, with a focus on enhancing the passenger experience.

The rollout strategy follows the successful deployment of broadband internet access on the airline’s long-haul fleet, a process initiated in stages since 2016.

Passengers on European flights will benefit from complimentary internet chat access, mirroring the model established for the long-haul fleet. This service allows travelers to use chat and messenger services such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger without incurring additional charges.

Additionally, SWISS plans to introduce product offers for extended online functionalities, including email, web browsing, and social media usage, catering to both the professional and personal needs of passengers.

Heike Birlenbach, Chief Commercial Officer at SWISS, emphasizes the significance of enabling customers to stay connected while on the move. The airline is committed to meeting the growing demand for connectivity on shorter flights, providing a more comprehensive and connected experience for its passengers.

To deliver inflight internet access on short-haul flights, SWISS will leverage a cutting-edge hybrid technology known as the European Aviation Network (EAN). This innovative system combines a satellite link with ground-based radio technology, ensuring a reliable broadband connection.

Importantly, the EAN technology prioritizes sustainability, featuring a significantly lighter on-board system compared to previous technologies. This weight reduction aligns with SWISS’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices, translating to lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

SWISS’s ambitious plans for broadband internet access on short-haul flights mark a significant step in the aviation industry’s efforts to enhance connectivity and passenger experience, all while embracing eco-friendly technology. Travelers can look forward to staying connected at 30,000 feet, bringing a new era of in-flight connectivity to SWISS’s European routes.
