Tourists visiting Seville, Spain, may soon have to pay a fee to enter the famous Plaza de España, a popular tourist destination and cultural hub.

Seville’s Plaza de España, built in 1928, is a significant landmark showcasing a unique blend of architectural styles: Baroque Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Neo-Mudéjar. It was originally constructed for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929.

The city council is proposing the measure to control tourist overcrowding and finance the plaza’s conservation and safety.

Mayor José Luis Sanz announced the plan on social media, citing concerns about damaged tiles, facades, and vendors occupying unauthorized spaces.

The proposal has sparked debate, with some residents criticizing it as unfair and suggesting a tourism tax on all visitors instead.

Seville, with over 3 million tourists annually, is grappling with the challenges of balancing the benefits of tourism with the needs of its residents.
