Tourists may be safe in Tanzania or not? Political chaos is taking over it seems like. A first year female student was brutally killed in Tanzania’s commercial city of Dar es Salaam last Friday as political tension heightened during a minor election campaign.

The student, Aquilina Baftaha was brutally shot by a single bullet which cut across her head, leaving hear dead while seated in a city commuter bus she had boarded on her way to the historical town of Bagamoyo.

The bullet that killed the student was fired during a confrontation between Tanzanian state police and demonstrators from the main opposition Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) Party on Friday evening.

Human rights groups had expressed fears over recent, grisly incidents on political grounds.

The brutal killing of the student from the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Dar es Salaam had triggered anger among human rights campaigners.

Main opposition Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) party said was shocked by the shooting to dead of a female university student while police officers were dispersing a peaceful demonstration it had organized.

The first-year university student was brutally struck by a bullet inside a bus the day before a fiercely contested parliamentary by-election in the city’s Kinondoni constituency took place.

“A young girl who was not part of our group was killed by a bullet that hit her,” said Vincent Mashinji, secretary general of the opposition Chadema party.

Chadema officials said a local party leader, Daniel John, was kidnapped, tortured and then beaten to death after unknown men bundled him into a car last week.

In September 2017, senior opposition lawmaker Tundu Lissu was shot several times at his home in Tanzania’s new capital Dodoma.

There has been a growing fear among prominent policy-makers, mainly from the opposition parties and journalists over kidnappings, torture and killings conducted by unknown assailants.
