Hawaii Tourism is wide open for business despite unhealthy air in Maui. Here is why visitors to Hawaii don’t have to worry.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website AirNow  Kihei on the Hawaiian island of Maui had the most unhealthy air in the United States at 2:00 pm Hawaii time, measured at 152. According to the AirNow website a measurement between AQI: Unhealthy (151 – 200) means: Everyone may begin to experience health effects and members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.

Kahului is the gateway to Maui for tourists from around the world. Hawaii’s second largest international airport is Kahului, Maui (OGG).

On May 22 eTN reported about problems with unhealthy air in Maui.  On May 25 Hawaii Governor Ige together with George Szigeti head of the Hawaii Tourism Authority assured visitors the air in Hawaii is clean, and the state is wide open for tourism.

Today at 2:00 pm the Environmental Protection Agency is telling the public the air in Kihei, Maui (about 10 miles from Kahului) is good. The air around the volcano on Hawaii island is moderate, and the rest of the state is good.

At 2:30 pm the Environmental Protection Agency reported the measurement for Kahului dropped to 81, which is moderate.

Hawaii Tourism Authority, the Maui Visitors Bureau, and the Maui Environmental Agency did not get back to eTurboNews, but when reaching out to the office of air quality management in Honolulu, eTN was told: “Most of our specialists are on Hawaii island. We had been monitoring the situation in Kahului all day and had emailed Maui, but we don’t have an answer yet.” According to the spokesperson in Honolulu, most likely the measurements are wrong due to maintenance.
