TANZANIA (eTN) – is arriving in Tanzania today in an official trip aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation between India and Tanzania and take up issues of terrorism and piracy in the Indian Ocean.
The High Commissioner of India in Tanzania Mr. K. V. Bhagirath said the Indian Prime Minister’s three-day visit to Tanzania will focus on key areas of India-Tanzania cooperation, targeting education and health service, skills and technology transfer, and strengthening South–South cooperation.
He said India has committed to support and cooperate with Tanzania on technology transfer.
The Indian Premier once worked with Tanzania’s former Tanzanian president Dr. Julius Nyerere, and during his visit to Tanzania, the Indian Premier will hold discussions with his host, Tanzanian President Mr. Jakaya Kikwete, focusing on bilateral cooperation on education, human resources, agricultural development, and investment opportunities available in Tanzania to Indian investors.
Dr. Singh will also sign agreement documents with President Jakaya Kikwete on various protocols aimed at strengthening India-Tanzania cooperation in economic and social sector projects.
India is the second largest source of foreign direct investments to Tanzania after Kenya, while the leading provider of health services, ICT, and education to Tanzanians.
Somali piracy in the Indian Ocean waters is the other key issue on the agenda, which Dr. Singh will address during discussions with Mr. Kikwete. Somali piracy and terrorism has so far threatened peace and security in the Indian Ocean corridor and discouraged trading between countries sharing the Indian Ocean waters.
India and Africa are facing the adverse impact of terrorism and piracy, with frequently hijacked crews and cargo ships in their area. During the past few years, over 200 ships were hijacked by Somali pirates in Indian Ocean waters.
