LOS ANGELES, California – Did you know that sugar cane waste can look very appealing, and cellulose can be a valuable ingredient for food and beverage packaging?

Germany’s largest catering company, fairgourmet, recently launched a new line of environmentally-friendly and biodegradable plates and dishes: Cups for hot and cold beverages, as well as cutlery are made of cellulose, plates for snacks and soups are made of sugar cane waste. Using renewable resources, which are biodegradable, is yet another step to green any meeting and event.

Fairgourmet is a subsidiary of Germany’s Leipziger Messe group, a top performing Green Globe member for years. The entire Leipziger Messe corporate group, their associates, and subsidiaries, are committed to the philosophy of sustainability. Fairgourmet provides an all-in-one catering concept for conventions, congresses, and trade shows. The catering company focuses on regional products, supporting the local economy; suppliers are typically within a radius of 100 miles.

The new packaging concept reflects the company’s mission statement of “Growing in Balance,” integrating best practices into the core of everyday corporate life.

“Being part of the Green Globe program and certification process, allows us to continuously improve our efforts, and strive for the best possible solutions,” said Detlef Knaack, Managing Director at fairgourmet. “It is our goal to provide 100% sustainable catering for meetings and events, and our new packaging concept is an important step into this direction.”

Fairgourmet’s consistent sustainable approach includes organic and fair trade products. Since 2011, only fair trade-labelled coffee has been served on the entire convention grounds in Leipzig. After the recent successful certification, their coffee now carries the “organic” seal of quality. As part of the certification process, fairgourmet employees are trained in the proper handling of organic products.
