In an initiative aimed at ensuring safe and accessible celebrations, the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (MIVB) has announced free public transport services for its bus, tram, and metro networks on New Year’s Eve.

This move is designed to facilitate transportation for revelers, offering a reliable means to navigate the city during the celebratory night.

From midnight until 5:30 am, the entirety of MIVB’s network will be open to the public without charge. Similarly, outside Brussels, the Flemish public transport company De Lijn will provide free services across 68 towns and cities in Flanders, contributing to safer transit options throughout the region.

Within the capital, specialized services such as the Noctis night bus service and tram route 81 will operate continuously throughout the night until 5:30 am on New Year’s Day. These services will ensure frequent transportation, with buses and trams running in both directions every 15 or 20 minutes.

Moreover, the regular tram and metro routes will extend their operating hours until 2:30 am, and notably, select bus routes will also run later than usual, enhancing accessibility for late-night travelers.

However, with the fireworks display scheduled from the Academia Palace near Paleizenplein, certain streets will be closed to traffic, unavoidably impacting public transport routes. Starting from 8 pm, tram routes 92 and 93 between Kruidtuin and Louiza will be suspended. Alternative options will be available, directing passengers to use metro lines 2 and 6 between these stops.

Adjustments, including diversions or shortening of some bus routes, will be implemented to navigate the anticipated disruptions.

This comprehensive transport plan aims to accommodate celebrants while addressing logistical challenges due to the event’s location.

By offering free services and expanding operational hours, authorities intend to promote a safe and hassle-free New Year’s Eve experience for all residents and visitors in Brussels.
