TAIPEI, Taiwan – Bicycle fans and businesses are gearing up for Asia’s largest bike show, dubbed Taipei Cycle, which will take off Wednesday in conjunction for the first time with a long-running sporting goods expo.

“We will combine the 27th Taipei Cycle and the 41st Taipei International Sporting Goods Show together this year, with the aim of providing the biggest one-stop shopping service for sports goods,” said Peter Huang, president and CEO of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, which is behind the event.

Both shows have attracted record numbers this year for both exhibitors and booths, Huang said at a pre-event press conference, and he expects over 10,000 foreign buyers over the four-day event.

Also planned for the side-by-side events are design competitions and industry forums at the Taipei World Trade Center’s Exhibition Halls 1 and 3 and the Nangang Exhibition Hall.

Also at Tuesday’s conference, Antony Lo, chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association, explained how Taiwan’s bicycle makers have moved to high-value products.

The average export price for Taiwanese bicycles grew 7.91 percent last year to hit US$450.5 per unit, though the total export value of bicycles and bicycle parts slid 3.39 percent year-on-year to US$2.64 billion, he said.

Sporting goods exports showed overall growth last year, on the other hand. Total exports amounted to US$1.67 billion, an increase of 3.72 percent from the previous year, according to statistics provided by the Taiwan Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.

Exports of fitness equipment saw the sharpest annual growth of 40.9 percent in 2013, followed by golf equipment (21.9 percent) and outdoor equipment (16.4 percent), the association said.
