The Kenya Airports Authority recently put to rest rumors started by Malindi politicians, that the airport was due for international status and a new facility was due to be built at a new site not too far from Malindi.

KAA managing director George Muhoho made it clear during a visit to the Kenyan coast that the present airport in Malindi was still underutilized and no money would be spent to create a rival facility to the existing main international airport in Mombasa, which he said served the coast well and was also still operating below its projected capacity. However, records also show that the aerodrome in Lamu and the airport in Malindi had recently been receiving funding for upgrades to various facilities like terminal buildings and runways to boost domestic air transport.
