CHICAGO, IL – Despite increased fees and stricter size restrictions, travelers are still checking their bags at roughly the same rate as last year. This was the finding from surveys conducted by The GO Group, LLC, a GO member and Chicago-based ground transportation company serving O’Hare International and Midway airports.

More than 917 travelers were polled in this year’s survey on luggage preferences. In 2014, 32 percent of respondents said they prefer to check their luggage; 21 percent said they prefer to carry on and 26 percent said they both check and carry on.

Twenty seven percent noted that whether they check or carry on depends on the situation, such as the length of their trip and the number of bags they were toting.

This compares with a 2013 poll of 570 travelers, where 28 percent said they checked their bags. Nineteen percent said they always carry on; 23 percent said they did both and 30 percent cited that it depended on the situation.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, passenger airlines collected $797 million in baggage fees, or 1.6 percent of total operating revenue in 2013.
