Sir James Mancham in Baku taking part in high-level summit on shared societies

Founding President of Seychelles James R. Mancham left the country on Sunday evening for Baku in Azerbaijan where he is now taking part in a high-level summit hosted by Le Club de Madrid in association with the Nizami Ganjavi Foundation on the theme ‘Toward a global shared societies agenda to promote long-term inclusive and sustainable growth’.

The working definition of shared societies is based on an approach to social inclusion developed and adopted by Le Club de Madrid. It is defined as a society based on equity, where each and every person, including those from all identity groups that make up the society, feel at home, feel that they belong and feel that they can play a full part in the society and at the same time fulfill themselves.

A shared society can be understood as one in which individuals share an equal capacity to participate in economic, social and political opportunities regardless of their religion, ethnic or linguistic group and where as a consequence relations between groups are peaceful.

In fact Le Club de Madrid, which is an independent, non-profit organisation composed of over 90 democratic former presidents and prime ministers from more than 60 different countries, has through its shared societies project been working for more than seven years to promote policy approaches that generate safe and prosperous shared communities in a productive and dynamic environment to maximise the economic contributions of all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, language, gender or other markers of identity.

In a statement issued before leaving Seychelles on Sunday evening, Mr Mancham said: “Against the background of the experience of Le Club de Madrid we are firmly convinced that the post 2015 sustainable development goals must address the issue of the continuing marginalisation of many groups on grounds of identity. The processes of marginalisation damage not only those groups but also society as a whole, socially, economically and politically. In particular, it has hindered and impeded the full achievement of the millennium development goals. If it is not addressed in the new set of sustainable development goals that are being formulated, it will hinder and impede their achievement again. It is to discuss this issue that the Baku Summit has been called.”
