Amsterdam‘s Schiphol Airport is facing extensive flight disruptions, with over a hundred flights delayed and dozens canceled today due to a severe cold snap.

The Netherlands flag carrier, KLM Airlines, cited adverse weather conditions and limited de-icing capacity as causes for the disruptions. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute issued a ‘cold yellow’ warning for snow and slippery conditions across the country.

While the airport authorities have not provided an official count of delayed and canceled flights, the departure schedule indicates significant delays, particularly for European destinations since yesterday evening. Flights to Helsinki, London City, Copenhagen, Stuttgart, Barcelona, Birmingham, Aalborg, and Frankfurt have been canceled for today.

A spokesperson for the airport anticipates a disrupted flight schedule throughout the day, urging passengers to contact their respective airlines for information and alternatives. Freezing conditions on the runways are hampering take-offs and landings, requiring de-icing procedures.

KLM assures affected passengers that they will be notified of any impacts on their flights as soon as possible.

As winter tightens its grip, the UK is also experiencing a cold plunge of Arctic air, prompting the Met Office to issue yellow warnings for snow and ice across Scotland, extending to Manchester in England and most of Northern Ireland. Transport officials advise travelers to check with operators for potential disruptions on rail, ferry, or air services.

The cold snap is expected to continue, with further impacts anticipated on Tuesday.
