The earthquake that shook Bali at 10:16 am Central Indonesia time on Thursday, October 13, has fortunately no reported casualties, although a number of school children and their teachers in a school in Denpasar were treated for minor injuries, and a workman who fell off a roof broke his leg.

Television news and the media showed people scrambling out of buildings and tourists running out of hotels.

According to Antara news, the Denpasar city’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said 19 buildings were damaged. The 19 buildings consist of 8 schools, 6 houses, a monument, a hospital, a museum, the Denpasar Regional Representatives Council office, and a firefighters’ office.

“Eight buildings are heavily damaged. The worst damage happened to Vocational High School 2 in Denpasar where almost its entire roof collapsed,” Chief of Denpasar`s BPBD Sudana Satri Graha said here on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Secretary to Denpasar city`s administration AAN Rai Iswara said he had asked related government officials to conduct a quick response towards the impact of the earthquake.

“Starting tomorrow, all damaged schools will be repaired,” he said adding that the city administration would pay for the medical treatment of victims.

Despite the intensity of the quake, no tsunami warning was sounded. But the quake was felt in East Java to Bali’s west, from Banyuwangi to Surabaya and to its east to the island of Lombok.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that there were no disruptions in flights at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International airport. ( www.budpar.go.id )
