The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has named the 33-year-old businesswoman as its tourism ambassador.

A woman from Ghana’s capital city took a monumental shot at the world record for the longest continuous singing during the Christmas Holidays. Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum from Accra commenced her ‘sing-a-thon’ on Christmas Eve, on Sunday, December 24 and concluded it the following Friday, December 29, after an impressive performance that lasted 126 hours and 52 minutes.

Asantewaa’s endeavor aligned with Ghana‘s push to draw in a larger number of tourists and showcase its rich cultural heritage, particularly its music. Just recently, the government introduced a visa-on-arrival initiative for tourists visiting the former British colony during the Christmas and New Year festivities as part of the ‘Beyond the Return’ campaign. This ten-year campaign aims to inspire individuals from the African diaspora to rediscover and reconnect with Ghana.

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has named the 33-year-old businesswoman as its tourism ambassador as a gesture of appreciation for promoting the attention on Africa’s biggest gold producer. This country is considered one of the most peaceful nations on the continent, as per the Global Peace Index.

Afua Asantewaa’s appointment to this role will enable her to closely collaborate with GTA in promoting and marketing the country both domestically and internationally. According to GTA officials, Asantewaa’s achievement greatly benefits the country and it is crucial to utilize Afua Asantewaa’s personality for this purpose.

Asantewaa’s continuous performance of local songs during the five-day event received massive backing from Ghanaians, including former President John Dramani Mahama and current Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia, both of whom are contenders for the highest office in Ghana’s upcoming 2024 elections.

According to reports, Asantewaa has allegedly surpassed India’s Sunil Waghmare’s record of singing for 105 hours, which he held since 2012. Unlike Waghmare, Asantewaa is not a professional singer, leading some Ghanaians on social media to doubt her ability to achieve this feat. However, she reportedly managed to unofficially exceed the record by an additional 21 hours.

Guinness World Records (GWR) responded to a comment on Facebook alerting it to Asantewaa’s completion of her attempt on Friday, describing the event as one that “certainly seems to have captured the public’s imagination.”

According to the Guinness World Records’ Facebook comment about Asantewaa’s achievement, the event has resonated with the public.

The GWR judges expressed their anticipation in receiving evidence in order to assess whether Asantewaa has achieved the record for the longest individual singing challenge.

In the meantime, Ghanaian cook Faila Abdul Razak commenced a cooking marathon at midnight on Monday with the goal of surpassing Irish chef Alan Fisher’s existing world record of 119 hours and 57 minutes.

Fisher dethroned Hilda Effiong Bassey, a Nigerian chef, as the world record holder for the longest cooking marathon in November, after she had held the title since June of the previous year.

Ghanian chef is aiming to cook continuously for over 120 hours with the goal of dethroning Fisher and regaining the championship for West Africa.
