Thailand recently extended the operating hours for nightclubs and entertainment venues in specific tourist areas.

A Ghanaian tourist was arrested in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for causing a fatal road accident while driving drunk. A worker was killed in the accident that injured two others. The incident occurred on the same day Thailand began extending its nightlife hours.

The 26-year-old Ghanaian tourist, Wisdom Okyere, faced multiple charges, including drunk driving, reckless driving causing fatalities and injuries, and driving without a license, as per reports from the Nation Thailand.

The man’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 121 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood, far surpassing the legal limit of 50 mg.

While relocating communication cables underground, a team from Sin Yotha Co. Ltd. was struck by the speeding vehicle driven by the tourist. Sadly, one worker was confirmed dead, and two others sustained injuries. The tourist mentioned he was on a two-week visit to Chiang Mai.

The tourist explained that he had been at a pub in Chiang Mai with friends before the accident happened while driving back to his hotel.

In Thailand, the alcohol laws stipulate fines of up to 200,000 baht (US$5,718) and potential imprisonment for up to 10 years for driving under the influence and causing such road accidents.

Additionally, driving licenses can be suspended or revoked due to such offenses.

Thailand recently extended the operating hours for nightclubs and entertainment venues in specific tourist areas.

Places like Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Samui can now remain open for an additional two hours, allowing them to operate until 4 a.m., starting on Saturdays.
