UN study: Tourists spend most money in Macau

The United Nations World Tourism Organization has recently published a study, revealing a list of the world’s favorite holiday destinations.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization has recently published a study, revealing a list of the world’s favorite holiday destinations. Macau appears ranked in 20th position, but it comes first in how much money is spent per head.

According to the organization, quoted by the BBC, visitors to Macau spend on average USD3,213 each. The United States of America comes next on the list, with tourists spending on average USD1,883 each. Last year, visitors spent a total of USD43.7 billion in Macau, while visitors to the USA spent USD126.2 billion.

Macau – being a destination known as a gambling paradise – attracted over 13 million visitors last year, according to the UN report.

France is the country attracting the most visitors, having received a total of 83 million tourists last year alone. But in this European country, visitors do not spend much. The average amount each spends is USD646.

China is third out of the top five most popular tourist destinations, having received over 57 million visitors last year. USD866 was the amount spent on average by each tourist while visiting mainland China.

The United States (second), Spain (forth) and Italy (fifth) appear on the list of top five most visited countries.
