Commemorating 350 years of settlement on Reunion Island

The population of Reunion Island this year blows out 350 candles!

The population of Reunion Island this year blows out 350 candles! On this occasion, the Regional Council is organizing an international conference on Friday, May 31, 2013, at the Domain in Villele Buccaneers, as well as a temporary exhibition on this theme. The Congress of Metropolis, countries in the Indian Ocean area, including Reunion Island are invited to discuss the topic of settlement of the island 350 years ago.

In 1663, those who were the original inhabitants of Reunion Island, docked in St. Paul near the cave of the First French. It was Louis Payen and Peter Pau, two French men from Madagascar, accompanied by 10 servants from the Big Island, including 3 women, who first settled on the island. Although they were not the first to set foot on the island, they are considered the first permanent occupants, having decided not to leave Reunion Island.

This year, it will, therefore, be 350 years since the first inhabitants of the island settled in St. Paul. This provided the opportunity for the Regional Council to organize a commemorative event on Thursday, May 30, to Saturday, June 1.

The program features several local artists and also speakers from Metropolis and the Indian Ocean area.
