US National Hurricane Center: Jose to become major hurricane by Friday

Storm Jose is expected to gain in strength and intensify into a major hurricane by Friday, the US National Hurricane Center said Thursday.

The hurricane is still about 715 miles east of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds 90mph, the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

Swells generated by Jose are likely to affect portions of the Leeward Islands by Saturday, the NHC said, adding hurricane watches were issued for the northern portion of the region.
