The 75-year-old man, who was not named, is said to have arrived on his own on the island on October 2.

He booked a room at a hotel in Makrys Gialos.

On the day after his arrival, he rented a car and set off on a tour of the island but was not seen again.

Hotel staff began to search for him on Friday as he was due to check out.

They entered his room and found that all his belongings were still there.

At that point, they notified the police.
