Harare – The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, has expressed commitment to the setting up of Tourism Police Units in the country’s major tourist resort areas.

ZTA chief executive Mr Karikoga Kaseke said a similar unit was already in place in Victoria Falls having been established five years ago. He was speaking at a function to reward the 2007 sportsperson of the year and 91 medallists who excelled during the SARPCO games held in the country last year.

The winners were given free two-day holiday vouchers to various destinations such as Caribbean Bay in Kariba and Troutbeck Inn in Nyanga and varying amounts of spending money. Mr Kaseke said the establishment of tourism police at Victoria Falls helped to keep the prime resort in the country an attractive, safe and secure destination. “The establishment of the unit has seen a decline of crime rates, which are however of petty nature at Victoria Falls,” he said

Mr Kaseke said tourism can only thrive where there is peace and security before appealing to the Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri to visit Victoria Falls as a guest of the tourism industry to get a first hand experience of the success of the unit.

Speaking on behalf of Commissioner Chihuri Deputy Commissioner in charge of administration Godwin Matanga reaffirmed the readiness to set up similar Tourism Units in all major tourist resorts.
