Located in Northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater, under the guidance of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), is a wildlife and human habitat where both the wild animals and tamed humans live together in peace and harmony.

Striding proudly, holding spears and sticks in their hands with clubs and a sword tied with a skin belt on their waists, the Maasai herders are proud and happy to live inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where they share the pastureland with wild animals.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is best known as “Africa’s Garden of Eden” and is one of the most tourist attractive wildlife areas in Tanzania, attracting over 640,000 tourists each year.

It is the only place in Tanzania and East Africa where humans live in peace with their natural enemies – the wild animals, including the most human killers of all African animals, mostly elephants, lions, buffaloes, and other ferocious animals.

Clad in traditional attire, the Maasai cattle herders are always found striding proudly with their heads of cattle inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, sharing pastures with wild animals peacefully.

Other than wildlife, Ngorongoro Conservation Area is an archaeological site where the famous British archaeologist, Dr. Louis Leakey and his wife Mary discovered the skull believed to be of the earliest man at Olduvai Gorge within the conservation area.

Day-long tours or trips are impressive while visiting special Maasai homesteads that have been developed for cultural tourism activities inside the wildlife conservation area. While driving through Ngorongoro, tourists may see Maasai girls and boys, finely dressed in red, blue, and purple clothes well prepared to welcome tourists visiting the conservation area

Foreign and local tourists are welcomed to learn and enjoy Maasai traditional dances, customs, and folklore at the cultural homesteads developed inside the Ngorongoro conservation area. The Maasai pastoralists cherish their culture and welcome visitors, happy to chat a bit with visitors who pay a visit to their communities which are shared by both wildlife and livestock.

Some among the pastoralists have voluntarily relocated to other regions of Tanzania, in particular Msomera village, in a plan to help to balance the number of people living inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Inside the Ngorongoro Crater, black rhinos may be spotted grazing on the crater floor together with gazelles, impalas, and buffaloes. Maasai herders are found grazing their herds of cattle, goats, and sheep near Lake Magadi inside the crater floor for salty water.

Similar to the biblical scriptures of the Garden of Eden, Ngorongoro was an ideal site in Africa where humans and wild animals have been living like this in peace and harmony for many years. This peaceful coexistence between wildlife and humans makes Ngorongoro Conservation Area among the leading tourist attractive areas in Africa worth visiting any time of year.
