In 2024, over 2.7 million Americans traveled to Japan, marking a significant increase of 33% compared to 2023, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
According to the JNTO’s New York Office, the number of American visitors to Japan in 2024 represented a 58% rise from the figures recorded in 2019, the last year considered “normal” before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, travelers are increasingly seeking unique and memorable experiences, which is why Japan has become a favored destination. JNTO aims to continue providing information and inspiration that enables visitors to fully appreciate Japan.
The JNTO has indicated that preliminary data for January 2025, along with projections for future bookings, suggest a sustained growth in American tourism to Japan for the upcoming year. JNTO will focus on promoting sustainable travel options in Japan, with Osaka being the host city for the World Expo this year, marking the first time in two decades that Japan has held this event. This makes 2025 a particularly significant year for tourism in Japan, and JNTO hopes many will seize this opportunity to explore the country’s unique attractions.
